Kala Ramnath began playing the violin at three under the tutelage of her grandfather, Vidwan Narayan Iyer, and her aunt Dr. N. Rajam. For fifteen years she studied with the Mewati vocal maestro, Sangeet Martand Pt. Jasraj. Her violin playing is characterized by an immaculate bowing and fingering technique, command over laya (tempo), and richness and clarity in sur (intonation). In 1984, she won the President’s award in the prestigious AIR music competition and 1988 became the first ever-Hindustani musician and violinist to record for CBS India Ltd. She has received the Rashtriya Kumar Gandharva Sanman, Pt. Jasraj Gaurav Puraskar, Sur Ratna, and Sur Mani awards. Official webpage
